Stephen King: Three of the Latest and Greatest from Stephen King: Dolores Claiborne, Insomnia, Rose Madder
Published in Paperback by New American Library (September, 1996)
Author: Stephen King

Rose Madder - more thriller than fantasy
How does KING do it? The mans middle name must be diversification/Rose Madder is one of his best - the story is suspensful and by the time you are half way through the book, you feel you personally know the charaers. King could have done away with the fantasy part and still have a great story! Bravo Mr. King!

It Show The Voices Of Abused Women.
Previous Book Review Stephen King, Rose Madder

Synopsis

Norman Daniels is a complete nutter. Apart from being the nastiest bigot on earth, he regularly beats his wife, Rose, to within an inch of her life. After a miscarriage and several trips to hospital, Rose suddenly decides she's had enough, and leaves. Up until this point, she's never known anything different, and assumed that every marriage was this way.

The story takes a great many turns as it follows Rose's life as a free woman (although Norman is always hot on her heels - he wants to teach her a lesson), and through a paranormal encounter with what seems to be herself in a parallel dimension, she finds the power to turn her life completely around.

My Thoughts

A few years ago, it seemed to me that Stephen King was moving towards a v! ery formulaic style of writing, easy to get used to and to predict. I am happy to say that this has been improving immensely in recent publications. In Rose Madder, he has achieved something I never thought anyone would...

I very rarely find a writer who is able to stir strong emotions in me - reality always stays firmly rooted in the back of my mind ("This is just a book, it's not real"), and so the writing does not affect me too deeply (perhaps this is the reason I am able to read some pretty nasty horror books - and watch gross-out videos - without having nightmares afterwards?). Rose Madder is somehow different. I actually found myself vehemently hating Norman Daniels, and feeling sorry for Rose. Perhaps it is because I have met people who could so easily turn into Norman, or simply because I haven't been reading the ri! ght books - I don't know. Either way, Stephen ! King has matured with age.

I would recommend Rose Madder to anyone without too squeamish a disposition, whether Stephen King aficionados or not. The plot may seem a little thin at times, but the emotional content made it for me, and the almost surreal paranormal side-plot serves as an exciting distraction from the sometimes painful realism of Rose's situation.

Excellent trio
My favorite Stephen King books have always been his Dark Tower series; that is until these three came out. And what convenience to have them altogether. Dolores Claiborne is wonderfully written from the main charactrer's view point. Insomnia definetly made it hard to sleep, couldn't put it down. And Rose Madder, may favorite of the three. Involved a case of domestic violence, a woman fighting for her life and freedom from a twisted cop. A must read trio. King's best three books in one.

Cruising Guide to New York Waterways and Lake Champlain
Published in Paperback by Pelican Pub Co (December, 1998)
Authors: Claiborne S. Young and Chris W. Brown
Average review score:

An excellent and Guide for the Northeast Boater
Chris Brown truely has a grasp on what a boater in the Northeast is looking for. I found that the information about the ports of call were particularly helpful for those not familiar with these areas. Highly recommended for those traveling in the Northeast.

Fun & Information-Filled
I found this book a must have for my cruise this spring. It's jam-packed with information, from the depth of water to a complete list of marinas and their amenities. I am surprised that a book that is so packed with critical information could also be so easy to understand and fun. The many photos, maps and stories make this book a pleasure to read. I'm glad I purchased this book a month before my trip. I kept it on my night stand, and by reading a little bit each night, it made for a better vacation. The references throughout the book, like tips for clearing customs, what not to miss, and tourist information listings, alone were worth the price of the book to me. As a novice boater. I also appreciated the chapter on marina etiquette.

The New York Times More 60-Minute Gourmet
Published in Paperback by Fawcett Books (January, 1986)
Authors: Pierre Franey and Craig Claiborne
Average review score:

Invaluable
I was surprised to see this classic cookbook so far down the popularity list. Checking our kitchen bookcase, where I keep the dozen or so cookbooks I use most often, I found that the copyright date on my hardback was 1981. Well, twenty-two years later, I no longer refer to it weekly because I have learned so much of it by heart, but I certainly use it monthly, and still find it invaluable.

More 60-Minute Gourmet, like its companion volume 60-Minute Gourmet, is a collection of weekly "60-Minute Gourmet" columns published in the New York Times during the 1970s and early 1980s. The recipes comprise a wide variety of cuisines and are uniformly quick and uniformly light (a handful of recipes call for heavy cream, but it can almost always be dispensed with). The ingredients and techniques still work well today - perhaps not the "cutting edge" dishes and presentations one might expect from, say, a Roy Yamaguchi, but mastering the 60-Minute Gourmet recipes will make you capable of cooking almost anything. Consider these as high-quality building blocks for creating your own brand of gourmet cuisine at home.

Keep an eye peeled for the late M. Franey's out-of-print volumes as well. They, too, remain fresh and tasty.

Fun and Informative!
I obtained this book by a fortunate accident - I use it constantly as a reference and, sometimes when I just need to read an interesting anecdote written by somebody who loves not only food, but all that surrounds it.

Pierre Franey does not talk down to his reader, but he does teach.

One of my favorite passages from his book is: "When I have been asked over the years the most basic thing an aspiring cook could be taught, the answer is almost invariable. If you learn a few baic techniques of cookery, the rest is applied logic. If you can make a basic mayonnaise, for example, you can make a sauce remoulade or a sauce tartare with the simple additions of a few ingredients such as choped anchovy, capers, pickles and so on."

I depend on Pierre, not only for his skill as a teacher, but just as much so for his ability to inspire.

I highly recommend this book for the busy professional who desires to make their house a home.

Stephen King: The #1 New York Times Bestsellers!: Dolores Claiborne/Insomnia
Published in Paperback by New American Library (November, 1995)
Author: Stephen King
Average review score:

King's Best!
Never has King done better. It's better than "The Shining" and "The Stand". King will have you riveted to your seat gasping for breath. I suggest an oxygen mask for this reading. It is simply fabulous. In "Insomnia", you never know where a twist will come. Of course, all his novels have been like that. But not like this. King takes you on a journey where the (finally) predictable turns upside down letting you fall. Buy the book! Its King's best!

Dolores Clairborne is the best!
This book made you think. The things that people go through can make you crazy. He put enough feeling into it to keep it real but, also enough craziness to give the tale a twist

My favourite (in a collection of more than 100 cookbooks).

Coastal Charts for Cruising Guide to Western Florida
Published in Spiral-bound by Pelican Pub Co (01 July, 2001)
Author: Claiborne S. Young
Average review score:

Only fair
While this collection does work with the author's cruising guide, it in no way replaces the need for the actual charts. I had hoped the author would have applied a consistent format in terms of depth coloring, lat/lon demarcation and Loran lines. All are variable from page to page. Compass roses are not consistently avaialable. The large scale chart showing the location of the individual pages is not clear and does not even show the first few pages at all. The volume I bought had 8 pages inverted, further adding to the difficulty. My advice is pass on this edition.

The best
One Word: AWESOME!!! When are you coming out with the East Florida edition???
